The City of Rensselaer is looking at clean mobility options to assist residents and has engaged a consulting team from LaBella Associates to assist in the process. The consulting team will conduct a feasibility study on clean mobility options to assist senior citizens needing to get to the Rensselaer County Rensselaer-East Greenbush Senior Citizen Center and residents without vehicles of their own needing to go grocery shopping.
Options being considered all involve electric vehicles (EVs) and include micro-transit services and shuttles, rideshare and on-demand services and carshare opportunities. Over the next several months, City Staff and the consulting team will launch a community survey, hold public events and/or focus groups and meet with service providers to explore options.
In March 2025, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) awarded funding to the City of Rensselaer to develop a plan to help address several transportation issues in the city and connect residents to grocery stores and community locations. “The City of Rensselaer is looking to the NYSERDA Clean Mobility Program as a way to provide access to the phenomenal new Rensselaer County Senior Citizen Center and to help shoppers get their groceries,” said Rensselaer Mayor Michael Stammel.
NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris said, “NYSERDA is proud to partner with the City of Rensselaer to study the feasibility of incorporating shared clean modes of transportation into their local community. I commend the City for starting to engage the public now as they begin to think about how adopting zero-emission shuttles, rideshare and on-demand services can better connect residents, especially seniors, to essential services, expand access to local businesses, and improve air quality.”
The City of Rensselaer Common Council authorized the acceptance of the NYSERDA award and the selection of LaBella as the consultant to assist on this project. The Common Council encourages all members of the community to participate in this project.
“LaBella appreciates the trust that the City of Rensselaer has in us to explore clean mobility options as a way to assist residents in accessing services and shopping,” said Douglas Teator, PE, Director of Multi-Modal Planning & Design Group, of LaBella Associates.
